It's 100 or so years after the Coming of Rifts that collapsed civilizations from its Golden Age of science and technology. Small patches of civilization exist within the Dark Ages, fueled by the last remnants of technology that they can keep functioning.
Two communities, linked by trade and governed by a single feudal lord as a rudimentary kingdom. River Town is a fishing village three day's travel by wagon from its sister village of Field Town, where rudimentary crops are grown and livestock kept. The land between is barren, unfit for habitation. The towns, as well as the caravans back and forth, are protected by a small company of loyal knights who wield the last remaining bits of pre-Rifts technology still available to these people.
A caravan was ambushed by raiders, who made off with a large amount of supplies, but more importantly with a number of women and children as captives. All of the characters are loyal knights of the realm, and have been called to hunt down the raiders and rescue the captives.
